Kazakh Technology for Processing Potato Waste into Feed Attracts International Experts' Attention
Publication date:19.08.2025

As part of the project IRN AP19174684 "Veterinary and Sanitary Assessment of Livestock Products When Using Extruded Feed Containing Non-Grade Potatoes," a technology for processing potato waste into complete feed for agricultural animals has been developed and tested.

Our method of producing extruded feed from non-grade and substandard potatoes was described in an article on the international platform All About Feed (Netherlands) https://www.allaboutfeed.net/animal-feed/feed-additives/kazakh-scientists-turn-potato-waste-into-sustainable-livestock-feed titled “Kazakh scientists turn potato waste into sustainable livestock feed”. The essence of the technology is that potatoes are crushed and mixed with cereal crops (barley, wheat, oats, triticale, corn, peas), as well as with natural phytoadditives such as extracts of Artemisia absinthium (wormwood) and Populus balsamifera (balsam poplar) buds. The resulting mixture undergoes extrusion processing, resulting in the formation of nutritious pellets that are convenient for storage and use.

The use of such feed not only ensures the rational use of food waste but also positively affects the veterinary and sanitary characteristics of livestock products. The feed helps improve the nutritional value, digestibility, and safety of livestock products. Furthermore, this development represents an environmentally sustainable solution that has already attracted the attention of the international scientific and agricultural community.

A patent for the invention of the method for preparing extruded compound feed with non-grade potatoes and phytogenics was obtained from the Republic of Kazakhstan, No. 37445. https://biofeed.kz/patent/sortsyz-kartop-pen-fitogenikter-osyl-ekstrudiyalan-kombikormdy-dajyndau-disi
