Due to its high content of biologically active substances, tansy extract is used in folk and traditional medicine to treat gastrointestinal diseases, helminth infections, inflammatory conditions and skin problems.
Tansy extract is rich in essential oils, the main component of which is thujone, a substance with powerful antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory effects. Flavonoids (luteolin, quercetin and apigenin) have antioxidant effects, strengthen blood vessels and protect cells from damage. Tannins have astringent and antimicrobial effects, supporting wound healing and reducing inflammation. Bitter compounds (tanacetin) stimulate gastric juice secretion, improving digestion and appetite. Organic acids (gallic, malic and ascorbic acids) support metabolism and immunity. The extract also contains macro- and trace elements (potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese and zinc) that support normal body functions.
Tansy extract is used to control parasites (worms and Giardia), normalise digestion and improve liver and gallbladder function. It helps relieve stomach spasms and pain and is used for gastritis and colitis. In dermatology, it is used for skin infections, eczema and pustular lesions. Its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties are also useful for colds.
Tansy extract contains thujone, which can be toxic at high doses. Its use must therefore be strictly dosed and agreed with a specialist.
