Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is a plant with numerous medicinal properties and a long history of use in folk medicine. It contains various biologically active compounds, including phenolic acids, alkaloids, essential oils and potentially psychoactive terpenes such as thujone, absinthin and anabsinthin, as well as volatile compounds such as cineole and camphor. It also has antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antimalarial and antibacterial properties.
With regard to bee diseases, wormwood has an effective repellent action. It is used for the prevention and treatment of bee diseases, including varroatosis.
The Varroa mite is the most serious pest and a major threat to the beekeeping industry worldwide in the 21st century. Varroa mites can transmit pathogenic viruses to honey bees, often causing colony collapse, and can negatively affect bee immune responses.
The use of chemical pesticides can contaminate bee products with residues and metabolites. Combining several highly active plant extracts may provide an alternative treatment against parasites and pathogens associated with bee diseases, particularly as a replacement for synthetic preparations and antibiotics.
