Bovine mastitis remains one of the most prevalent and economically significant diseases in dairy farming, leading to reduced milk yield, deterioration of milk quality, and increased costs associated with treatment and culling of affected animals. Recent studies have demonstrated that the udder microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining mammary gland health, while disruption of its composition can be considered one of the risk factors contributing to the development of inflammatory processes [1, 2, 3]. At the same time, the increasing resistance of mastitis pathogens to conventional antimicrobial agents necessitates the search for safe and effective alternatives [4].
The widespread use of antibiotics has become one of the major drivers of the rapid emergence of antimicrobial resistance among bacterial pathogens causing mastitis [5]. One of the most promising approaches to reducing antibiotic use is the application of plant-derived bioactive compounds, including phytogenics and phytobiotics, whose efficacy has been supported by scientific evidence.
The aim of this study was to investigate dysbiotic changes in the udder microbiota of cows with different forms of mastitis and to evaluate the potential of plant-derived bioactive compounds for mastitis control and improvement of milk quality.
The study was conducted within the framework of research project AP23484620, "Development and implementation of phytogenic and phytobiotic products for the prevention and treatment of mastitis in animals with assessment of milk quality and safety."
