Fir is an important source of numerous phytochemicals of pharmacological significance, including carbohydrates, fatty acids, fatty alcohols, flavonoids, glycosides, hydrocarbons, lignans, phenols, quinines, proteins, resins, saponins, steroids, tannins, terpenoids and volatile oils.

Pharmacological uses of fir include analgesic, antiasthmatic, antidiabetic, antidiarrhoeal, anthelmintic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, bactericidal, antioxidant, antipyretic, antirheumatic, antispasmodic, antitumour and neuroprotective actions, alongside other non-pharmacological uses.

Fir is widely used in folk medicine as a general tonic, cold remedy and antiviral agent.
